Sacred...
This is just to let you know about the excellent, free "Sacred" exhibition at the British Library, on until 23 September.
They've collected together all sorts of early and other manuscripts and other religious texts from the three main monotheistic religions, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam....
Part of its fascination is that it reminds us of various things:
- Christians aren't the only faith with a sacred book
- The bible comes from a complex background of inter-religious dialogue, conflict and discussion
- The bible was written in a number of different languages: Hebrew, Aramaic, commercial Greek
- The bible was copied and read, in ancient times, in all sorts of languages: these three above, plus, for example Coptic, Syriac, Latin...
The texts are hugely beautiful, also, and often illuminated.
You can book online. It's well worth going, especially if you've not been to the impressive British Library building before. If you're wavering, here are a couple of photos to get you interested...
And, until 29 July, there's a wonderful exhibition of sculpture called "Time in Stone" by Emily Young just over the road at St Pancras Parish Church. It's also free.
Why not have a look at both: it's a great day out!
